Ruth and James’ Wedding – Fundraising for Active Against Cancer
In place of traditional wedding gifts, Ruth and James are asking for donations for various charities close to their heart, one of which is Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity’s (HHCC) for the Active Against Cancer (AAC) Service. In January 2024, Ruth was diagnosed with breast cancer. During Ruth’s treatment, AAC were instrumental in her rehabilitation following breast cancer surgery, as well as keeping her active during chemotherapy in order to try to alleviate some of the side effects of the treatment.
AAC help to support patients with the physical and mental battle that comes with a cancer diagnosis, helping from pre-op preparation all the way through to post recovery follow-up. As well as raising money for their wedding on Saturday 9 August 2025, Ruth and James will be undertaking other fundraising activities throughout the next year in order to raise money for this brilliant service.

David’s 10K Dash to raise funds for Active Against Cancer
David is running in his first competitive 10K race at the Leeds Abbey Dash on Sunday 13 October 2024 and is aiming to cross the finish line in less than an hour. He is running to raise funds for the Active Against Cancer (AAC) service who have given him such tremendous support and encouragement since he was first diagnosed with Bowel Cancer.
David had never run before his illness but inspired by the AAC team, committed himself to being able to run 5K following the Couch to 5K programme. He remembers thinking in the early weeks how hard it was to run for 3 minutes! Now David continues to attend the weekly AAC Active Run Session and is a keen participant in the Harrogate Parkrun, especially valuing the opportunity to meet with and encourage fellow members of the scheme in the monthly 5K Your Way Parkrun.
Please support him in his efforts to raise funds and provide a huge thankyou to the AAC and 5K Your Way teams.

Will’s Yorkshire Marathon 2024
I have always been involved in competitive sports but since retiring from Rugby and becoming a Dad, I have gained the obligatory “Dad Bod”. Having never really run more than 400m in one go before, I took up running as a way of keeping fit and losing weight. I quickly found that running was great for my mental health, so last year I decided to run my first marathon for a Men’s Mental Health Charity. Everything was going well and I was on target to run under 4hours. At mile 25 a fellow runner collapsed in front of me so I stopped to help him up and help him to to a first aid station… I ended up completing the marathon in 4hrs and 39 seconds.
While happy with my achievements on that day, I have unfinished business and have set myself the challenge to complete the Marathon in under 4 hours. This year I have chosen to run the Yorkshire Marathon for Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity, who do so much to support the great staff and patients of HDFT and our wider community.

Emily and Keith’s Wedding fundraising for Active Against Cancer
Instead of traditional wedding gifts, Emily and Keith are asking for donations to charities close to their heart, one of which is Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity’s (HHCC) Active Against Cancer (AAC) fund. Alongside the doctors and nursing team, AAC were instrumental in supporting Em’s dad, Ian, in his battle with cancer back in 2021. It is thanks to AAC and the NHS that Ian will walk Em down the aisle on Saturday 14 September 2024 and be able to ceilidh all night- cancer free!AAC help to support patients with the physical and mental battle that comes with a cancer diagnosis, helping from pre-op preparation all the way through to post recovery follow-up. “Having my Dad fit and well for my wedding day is a greater gift than anyone could give. Our hope is that any money raised will enable AAC to help more people diagnosed with cancer so that they can be present and well for more special days with their loved ones.” -
Yorkshire Three Peaks – Gemma
I have always loved the outdoors and have recently spent more time exploring local footpaths and areas of outstanding natural beauty resulting in my first climb up Munro in Glencoe. This has lead to the decision of taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks on Sunday 15 September 2024! This will be an excellent way to challenge myself as well as raising money for a cause that is close to my heart, Active Against Cancer (AAC) as part of Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity (HHCC). I’m excited to take on the challenge and take advantage of the training time to visit more beautiful areas of the British countryside.

Yorkshire Three Peaks – Oliver
Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity (HHCC) are really excited to be working once again with Sky Blue Adventures to bring the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on Sunday 15 September 2024!
I am a Volunteer at Harrogate Hospital Radio and really enjoy a challenge! I successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro in January 2019, which is 19,340ft AMSL. The Yorkshire Three Peaks seemed like the perfect opportunity to dig out my walking shoes, alongside raising money for HHCC.
All the money raised from this exciting challenge will go towards vital funds, going above and beyond the NHS for the benefit of patients, their families and staff across the footprint of Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust.

Support The Special Care Baby Unit at Harrogate District Hospital
The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) here at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) is a Level 1 special care baby unit with 7 cots. We look after babies born over 32 weeks gestation who require extra support. The nurses work alongside parents to ensure they are included in their baby’s care and encourage and support areas such as breastfeeding and skin to skin. We are currently raising money to make environmental changes to the unit. The impact of these changes would be significant for those accessing them; having a baby born with unexpected complications is very challenging for families, therefore we want to give them a home away from home where possible.

Support Woodlands Ward at Harrogate District Hospital
Woodlands Ward is a 16 bedded general paediatric ward which takes children ranging from 0-16 years of age. We see all children of any speciality such as surgery, ophthalmology, ear nose and throat etc. As the only acute paediatric unit within the Harrogate District Hospital, we want to make sure we are providing child friendly, individualised care. Recently most of our fundraised money has supported the completed artwork in the main bay areas within Woodlands Ward and within some of the side rooms. We would relish the opportunity to continue this artwork in our remaining side rooms, but do not currently have the funds to do this. The artwork creates a warmer, more inviting area for children to visit, hopefully alleviating some of their anxiety. The feedback received from the environmental changes to Woodlands Ward over the past few years has been palpable, families who visited prior to the artwork have commented on how much more relaxed their children were since the changes have been made. We are looking to continue this fundraising and make the ward a home away from home.
