My name is Jacob and earlier this year my wife and I welcomed into this world our baby boy who was born prematurely at 34 weeks. This ended up with our new-born staying in the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) where we got to witness first-hand the wonders the team on that ward provide.
Having a child born with unexpected complications is stressful but this time was made slightly easier with the fact, as parents, we could stay “on site” in one of SCBU’s parents rooms. A place where home comforts are present could take us away from the “hospital environment” whilst only being across the corridor to our son.
SCBU are looking to improve these facilities so that more families can stay with their new-borns in those stressful and difficult early days. To do this, the unit is looking to raise money for the following:
1) Enhance the facilities provided to families and staff
2) Artwork for each room to be installed to ensure the environment is as warm and welcoming as possible
3) Create a third parents room, to allow parents to reside with their babies once they are nearing home
4) Update the current bathroom facilities available to parents.
To help with their efforts and as a small gesture to say thank you (I can never repay SCBU for allowing my baby to come home happy and healthy), I plan to run the Yorkshire Marathon in October 2025 whilst raising funds for these essential improvements.
Any donations would be hugely appreciated and we know first hand what a difference this will make. Thank you.
